On October 2017, three political activists walked to the Merseyside Derby at Everton’s Goodison Park stadium.
They were like any of the tens of thousands of fans attending the game.
However, what was trailing behind them set them apart – they were pulling a green wheelie bin.
The green Liverpool City Council bin, bearing the logos of the respective Everton and Liverpool fan organisations the Blue Union and Spirit of Shankly, was going to go on the street outside a pub with the purpose of collections tins of food, toiletries and other goods foer a local community foodbank.
Nine years on and Fans Supporting Foodbanks has now spread across all tiers of the British football pyramids and the issue of food poverty is among those most that football supporters are most aware of.
Hundreds of tons of food and other good are collected every year at British football grounds and Fans Supporting Foodbanks is a central partner in Food Pantry schemes in Liverpool which are revolutionising how food poverty is addressed.
